West Craven High School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its students. Each student’s welfare is of paramount importance. We recognise that some children may be especially vulnerable to abuse. We recognise that children who are abused or neglected may find it difficult to develop a sense of self-worth and to view the world in a positive way. We recognise that some children who have experienced abuse may harm others or be at further risk to themselves. We will always take a considered and sensitive approach so that we can support all of our students.
It is the responsibility of everyone working in or for West Craven High School to help keep children and young people safe.
At West Craven High School, we have a committed Safeguarding team who work hard to ensure the safety of all children at the school. In charge of this team is the Designated Safeguarding Lead who is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and who leads on any safeguarding concerns or issues that may arise. This team is made up of the following people:

Operation Encompass operates in all police forces across England. It helps police and schools work together to provide emotional and practical help to children. The system ensures that when police are called to an incident of domestic abuse, where there are children in the household who have experienced the domestic incident, the police will inform the key adult (usually the designated safeguarding lead) in school before the child or children arrive at school the following day. This ensures that the school has up to date relevant information about the child’s circumstances and can enable immediate support to be put in place, according to the child’s needs.
As part of our commitment to keeping children safe, we are proud to be part of Operation Encompass.Being part of Encompass means our school will receive a notification from Lancashire Police before the start of the next school day when a child or young person has been involved in or exposed to a domestic abuse incident the previous day. The information is given in confidence to the Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) and will enable us to provide the best possible support for the child and family.
More information about the scheme and how schools can become involved is available on the Operation Encompass website (click the image above).

It can be hard to know what to do if you’re worried someone close is expressing extreme views or hatred, which could lead to them harming themselves or others. Working with other organisations, the police protect vulnerable people from being exploited by extremists through a Home Office programme called Prevent. Act early and tell them your extremism and radicalisation concerns in confidence. You won’t be wasting their time and you won’t ruin lives, but you might save them.
