    SEND

At West Craven High School, we work together with students, parents, staff and outside agencies to secure the best outcomes for our pupils with SEND. We invest in the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills so that students with SEND may gain the skills they need to achieve in these ‘Gateway subjects’ that allow them to follow their chosen 16+ pathway and secures them options in the future.

We create opportunities to foster good relations between pupils with and without SEND through assembly themes, Personal Development lesson topics and teacher’s awareness of how to model and support communication skills. We eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation against students with SEND by ensuring that everyone understands what behaviour is expected of them and that the above will not be tolerated.

We promote the advance of equality of opportunities of pupils with SEND by making Reasonable Adjustments. These enable students to participate in all areas of school life such as school trips, clubs and access to further study or employment opportunities.

Our Senior Leader responsible for SEND provision is Bleddyn Hughes. He can be contacted by calling 01282 812292. He will:

    • Work with the Principal and SEND governor to determine the strategic development of the SEND policy and provision in the school
    • Have day-to-day responsibility for the operation of this SEND policy and the co-ordination of specific provision made to support individual pupils with SEND, including those who have EHC plans
    • Provide professional guidance to colleagues and work with staff, parents, and other agencies to ensure that pupils with SEND receive appropriate support and high quality teaching
    • Advise on the graduated approach to providing SEND support

    • Work with the Principal and governing board to ensure that the school meets its responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 with regard to reasonable adjustments and access arrangements
    • Ensure the school keeps the records of all pupils with SEND up to date.

At West Craven High School, we offer personalised learning opportunities that strive to cater to each learner's differing needs. We do this through a variety of strategies including:

    • Individual Education plans that are reviewed and reinforced with staff throughout the year.
    • Dyslexia screening.
    • An Intervention room that offers specific, individual support during lesson time for students who need extra guidance.
    • Computerised programmes to help engage all students to work on key skills.
    • A dedicated SEND team that provide in class support alongside our robust intervention programme.
