All the sections need to be completed and have an outline in them to get a level 1 pass. Two dishes need to be produced independently and safely.
For level 1 pass to level 2 pass, you need to describe, compare, and give reasons and produce 2 simple dishes.
For a level 2 pass to a merit, you need to give clear reasons and explanations and produce 2 dishes with accompaniment or garnish that show a good level of skill.
For a merit to distinction, you need to give in depth reasons and produce 2 dishes with accompaniment and garnish that show a range of high-level cooking and preparation skills and flair in presentation.
