Computing

Our Key Stage 3 Computing curriculum is built around three key areas: computer science, information technology, and digital literacy. Students learn how computers work, develop practical skills using a range of digital tools, and understand how to use technology safely and responsibly. Through a mix of creative and hands-on topics, they build confidence in solving problems, sharing ideas, and preparing for life in a digital world.

Year 7 Computing Topics

  • Digital Foundations and Presentation Skills
    Learning how to log on, organise your work, stay safe online, find reliable information, and present your ideas clearly using digital tools.
  • Networks: From Semaphores to the Internet
    Learning how computer networks work, including how devices connect and communicate across the internet.
  • Modelling Data (Spreadsheets)
    Using Excel to input, analyse, and present data in meaningful ways.
  • Programming Essentials in Scratch (Parts 1 & 2)
    Learning the fundamentals of programming, including sequencing, selection, and problem-solving using a block-based language. In Part 1, you build the basics such as sequencing instructions, creating simple animations, and using selection (if statements). In Part 2, you develop these skills further by using repetition (loops), improving and debugging your programs, and creating more complex projects
  • Using Media: Gaining Support for a Cause
    Creating digital content (e.g. blogs or presentations) to raise awareness of a real-world issue, including research, evaluating sources, and using media responsibly.

Year 8 Computing Topics

  • Layers of Computing Systems
    Understanding how computer systems work, including hardware, software, the CPU, and how components interact including logic and logic gates.
  • Media – Vector Graphics
    Designing and creating digital graphics using vector software, including logos, icons, and illustrations.
  • Developing for the Web
    Creating web pages and understanding how websites are structured and displayed.
  • Representations – From Clay to Silicon
    Exploring how data is represented in computers, including binary and how text, images, and numbers are stored digitally.
  • Mobile App Development
    Designing and creating simple apps, focusing on user interface, functionality, and meeting user needs.
  • Introduction to Python Programming
    Moving from block-based coding to text-based programming (Python), learning key concepts such as variables, selection, and iteration.

Year 9 Computing Topics

  • Python Programming with Sequences of Data (part 2)
    Developing more advanced programming skills using Python, including working with lists, inputs, and improving programs.
  • Data Science
    Analysing and interpreting data to identify patterns and draw conclusions using digital tools.
  • Media – Animations
    Creating digital animations, focusing on design, sequencing, and refining creative media products.
  • Representations – Going Audio-Visual
    Understanding how images, sound, and video are stored and represented digitally.
  • Introduction to Cybersecurity
    Learning how to protect systems and data, including common threats and how to stay secure online.
  • Media – Open Evening Video Project
    Planning and editing a promotional video for a real audience. Students develop skills in storyboarding, editing, and refining media products based on feedback to create a professional final outcome.
